The prominent ear, also known as the sail ear, is defined as the most common deformity of the ear. It usually occurs due to loose cartilage in the ear area or insufficient ear folds. For these reasons, the ear, which has soft tissue, can stand curved forward or sideways, causing an unaesthetic appearance. The prominent ear can be seen in both ears as well as in both ears together. Women can usually hide the prominent ear problem with their hair, but it is difficult for men to hide this problem, especially since it is not possible for men. For this reason, men resort to aesthetic surgery more often to treat this problem. Prominent ear problem is easily treated with aesthetic operations.

Prominent Ear Causes

The prominent ear problem is congenital, in other words, it occurs due to genetic factors. For this reason, the probability of this problem increases in people who have prominent ear problems in their family, especially in their parents. Genetically transmitted and prominent ear causes can be listed as follows;

The angle between the posterior ear bone and the auricle is too wide

Ear cartilages have a soft structure

    • Reasons such as the absence of folds in the upper part of the ear and the fact that the auricle consists of a flat tissue as if it has been ironed may cause prominent ear problems.

Prominent Ear Teatment

Prominent ears, which especially affect school-age children psychologically, can be treated at the right time and by using the right treatment methods. Prominent ear surgery, which is a simple aesthetic surgery operation that does not carry serious risks, is an operation that should be performed by a specialist plastic surgeon and should be performed under hospital conditions. It is performed by applying local or general anesthesia in line with the surgeon's recommendation, taking into account the patient's age.

· Depending on the condition of the prominent ear, the duration of the operation may vary. However, in general, prominent ear surgery takes 45 minutes to 90 minutes.

· After prominent ear surgery, necessary examinations are performed and the patient is discharged on the same day.

Depending on the ear structure and the technique used by the surgeon, an operation can be performed on the anterior or posterior part of the ear.

· By analyzing the root cause of the problem, the ear cartilages are shaped as they should be and the ear is repositioned backward.

Special bands are used for 1-2 weeks after the surgery.

The incisions opened during the surgery are usually behind the ear and do not cause an aesthetic appearance.

· The surgery does not affect hearing during or after recovery, and the patient can easily continue his social life. The recovery period in prominent ear surgery, which is applied quite simply and quickly, can vary from 1 week to 2 weeks. At the end of this process, the prominent ear appearance completely disappears and the person has ears that look natural and as they should be.
